Here are some tips for those who choose to live near Piazza Navona:

  • Markets: The closest open market for buying fresh food is Campo dei Fiori. very characteristic market in the morning and a vivid pubs area at night time. (Opens every day until 13:00 except Sundays).

A very big fruit and vegetable market that is also less expensive, is in Piazza Vittorio (bus No. 70, last stop and then a 10 minutes walk).

  • The nearest alley of the apartment is a street of artisans. Via dell'Orso. It holds an open gallery with works every other Saturday, yet you can just visit the stores and see the artist in actions in normal opening hours.

  • An English local newspaper is "Wanted in Rome", published every other week.

  • A very good restaurant (and not terribly expensive) is right behind the house, in Via dell'Orso and is called Osteria Dell'Orso (closed on Mondays). On the same street there is a very good Fish Restaurant called LAGANA'.

  • Behind the Navona square crossing Corso Vittorio Emanuelle there is a nice and not very expensive restaurant called Insalata Ricca (Piazza Pasquino).

  • Although the piazza is so beautiful and sitting there for passers by watch and street entertainers is a great way to relax and get some inspiration and maybe a few laughs, The restaurants at the Navona square itself are not recommended as they are expensive, not good quality and basically are tourist traps...

The piazza was built as an ancient Roman circus, a stadium from the 1st century Stadium where people came to watch games. Navona means actually a "big ship" in Italian as it has that shape but also had periods when it was field with water boats as part of the Roman fun.

The baroque Piazza Navona has sculptural and architectural elements everywhere: at it's very center the Fountain of the Four Rivers of Bernini. From 1651. other works made by Borromini, and other fountains by Giacomo della Porta - the Fontana di Nettuno and the Fontana del Moro
